Frequently asked questions
Plant training course FAQs
Answers to common questions about NPORS training, plant operator courses, operator cards, course costs and booking your training.
Which NPORS training course do I need?
The right course depends on your previous experience and the type of machinery you need to operate.
Beginners normally require novice training, experienced operators may be eligible for an Experienced Worker Test, while existing cardholders may benefit from refresher training.
Read our NPORS Novice Training Guide, Experienced Worker Test Guide or contact our training team for advice.
How long does plant training take?
Course duration depends on the plant category, your previous operating experience and the training route selected.
Experienced Worker Tests can often be completed within one day, while novice courses may take several days to provide sufficient practical training.
Compare typical course durations and prices in our How Much Does NPORS Training Cost? guide.
Can you provide training on our own site?
Yes.
Many plant training courses can be delivered on suitable customer sites throughout the UK using your own machinery and working environment.
This is often the most convenient and cost-effective option for employers training several operators.
The customer must normally provide suitable machinery, relevant documentation and a safe, segregated area for training and assessment.
Contact our training team to discuss your site requirements.
Do I receive an NPORS Operator Card?
Successful candidates completing the appropriate NPORS training and assessment can receive the relevant certification and operator card where applicable.
The correct card route depends on the work you intend to carry out and the requirements of your employer or site.
Learn about Traditional NPORS registration, Red Trained Operator Cards and Blue Competent Operator Cards in our NPORS Cards Explained guide.
Can I upgrade to a Blue Competent Operator Card later?
Yes.
Operators following the applicable construction card route can normally progress by completing the relevant Plant Operations NVQ before applying for a Blue Competent Operator Card.
Read our Plant Operations NVQ Guide for information about workplace assessment and Red-to-Blue progression.
Do I need previous plant operating experience?
No.
Novice courses are designed for people with little or no previous experience operating plant machinery.
They include structured theory and practical instruction before assessment.
Our NPORS Novice Training Guide explains what beginners can expect before attending their first course.
How much does NPORS training cost?
Training costs vary according to the machine category, your experience, the course duration, the number of candidates and whether training is delivered at our centre or on your site.
Our NPORS Training Cost Guide explains the main factors affecting prices and includes typical course examples.
Can employers book training for multiple operators?
Yes.
We regularly deliver group training for construction companies, civil engineering contractors, utilities, local authorities, housebuilders and industrial organisations.
On-site training can be particularly cost-effective where several employees require the same plant category.
Contact us for a site-specific group quotation.
How do I book a plant training course?
Contact our team with the machine category you require, your current level of experience, the number of candidates and your preferred training location.
We will recommend the appropriate course and provide a quotation before arranging a date.
You can also browse our Plant Training Knowledge Centre for free guidance before booking.
Do I legally need a licence to operate a digger?
There is no single government-issued digger licence in the UK.
However, when an excavator is used for work, the operator must be properly trained and competent.
Employers and construction sites commonly require recognised evidence of training for the correct excavator category.
Read our Digger Licence Guide for a full explanation of private-land, workplace and construction-site requirements.
