What Is 360 Excavator Training?
360 Excavator Training teaches operators how to prepare, operate and shut down a tracked or wheeled excavator safely and efficiently.
The course combines theoretical knowledge with practical machine operation and assessment.
Excavators are widely used throughout construction, groundworks, civil engineering, drainage, utilities, demolition and infrastructure.
Operators may be required to excavate trenches, load dumpers, backfill excavations, grade materials, work around underground services and operate different attachments.
Good excavator training is not simply about passing a test.
Operators need to understand the machine, recognise hazards, carry out appropriate pre-use checks and demonstrate safe, controlled operation in realistic working conditions.
360 Digger Training – Is It the Same as Excavator Training?
Yes.
People often use the terms digger training, 360 digger training and excavator training to describe training for a 360-degree excavator.
If you are searching for a digger course, digger ticket or excavator operator course, the important thing is choosing the correct machine category and training route for the excavator you need to operate.
Vally Plant Training provides NPORS 360 excavator training for novice and experienced operators, including Above 10 Tonnes, Below 10 Tonnes and Micro Excavator categories.
Who Is the 360 Excavator Course For?
Our NPORS excavator courses are suitable for individuals and employers and can be matched to different levels of experience.
The course is suitable for:
Train with confidence

360 Excavator Training Above and Below 10 Tonnes
The correct course depends primarily on how much genuine excavator operating experience you already have.
Novice 360 Excavator Training
For candidates with little or no previous excavator experience who need structured practical training before assessment.
At our Tewkesbury centre, novice training is available for Below 10t and Above 10t excavator categories, with one-to-one training available where appropriate.
Experienced Worker Test
Already operating 360 excavators professionally?
Competent operators with sufficient practical experience may be suitable for the NPORS 360 Excavator Experienced Worker Test, rather than completing a full novice course.
This is an assessment of existing competence, not a shortcut for somebody who still needs training.
Refresher Training
Previously trained operators who need to update their knowledge and practical operating skills may be suitable for refresher training.
360 Excavator Training Prices UK
The cost of 360 excavator training in the UK depends on the excavator category you need and whether you require a full novice course or an Experienced Worker Test.

How Much Does a 360 Excavator Ticket Cost?
For an experienced operator, a 360 excavator ticket can cost from £360 + VAT at our Tewkesbury training centre.
New operators who require training before assessment can complete a novice 360 excavator course from £2,500 + VAT for Below 10 Tonnes or £2,700 + VAT for Above 10 Tonnes.
The difference in 360 excavator training prices reflects the training route required.
An Experienced Worker Test assesses skills an operator already has, whereas novice excavator training includes structured theory and practical instruction before assessment.

NPORS 360 Excavator Test for Experienced Operators
Already an experienced excavator operator and don't need a full training course?
The NPORS 360 Excavator Test, also known as the Experienced Worker Test (EWT), is designed for competent operators who already have sufficient practical experience and can operate a 360 excavator safely without instruction.
At our Tewkesbury training centre, the NPORS 360 Excavator Experienced Worker Test starts from £360 + VAT and can be completed for the appropriate Above 10 Tonnes or Below 10 Tonnes excavator category.
During the NPORS excavator test, candidates must demonstrate the knowledge and practical skills expected of a competent operator, including pre-use checks, safe travelling and positioning, excavating, trenching, backfilling, grading, loading and correct shutdown procedures.
Vally Plant Training recommends candidates have at least one year's relevant excavator operating experience before attempting the test.
Someone operating an excavator every day may develop competence differently from somebody who has only used one occasionally, so suitability should be based on genuine ability as well as time spent operating.
The Experienced Worker Test is an assessment of existing competence, not a shortened novice excavator course.
If you still require instruction or assistance to operate the machine safely, novice training is the appropriate route.
Which 360 Excavator Category Do I Need?
Choosing the correct excavator category matters because your NPORS operator card should reflect the type and size of machine you are trained and assessed to operate.
360 Excavator Below 10 Tonnes
The Below 10 Tonnes category covers 360 excavators with an operating weight below 10 tonnes, excluding the separate Micro Excavator category.
This is a common choice for operators working with compact and mid-sized excavators across construction, groundworks, drainage, utilities and landscaping.
360 Excavator Above 10 Tonnes
The Above 10 Tonnes category is for larger 360 excavators over 10 tonnes and is commonly required by operators working on larger construction, earthmoving, civil engineering and infrastructure projects.
If the machines you expect to operate are above 10 tonnes, make sure you complete training and assessment on the appropriate category.
Micro Excavator – Up to 1 Tonne
Micro excavators up to 1 tonne have their own category and should not simply be treated as a smaller Below 10 Tonnes machine.
Tracked and Wheeled 360 Excavator Training
Excavators differ in size, undercarriage, stability and operating characteristics.
We can provide training and assessment on suitable tracked or wheeled machines, subject to the required NPORS category and the equipment available.
Tracked Excavators
Training covers safe travelling, positioning, stability, excavating and working on appropriate ground conditions.
Courses are available for excavators above and below 10 tonnes.
Wheeled Excavators
Training addresses the different travel, steering, braking, stabilisation and positioning requirements associated with wheeled 360 excavators.
Tell us the excavator type, operating weight and work your operator will undertake when requesting a quotation.
We will help you identify the appropriate training route.
Our tracked excavator training covers safe travelling, positioning, stability, excavating and working over suitable ground conditions.
Wheeled excavator training also covers the different steering, braking, stabilisation and positioning requirements associated with wheeled machines.
NPORS or In-House Excavator Training?
Vally Plant Training can provide both NPORS accredited 360 Excavator Training and in-house excavator training and certification, depending on what the operator, employer, client and site actually require.
NPORS 360 Excavator Training
The NPORS route is generally the stronger option for operators who require recognised certification for work across different construction sites, employers or contractors.
Depending on the machine and category required, this can include:
- Micro Excavator
- 360 Excavator Below 10 Tonnes
- 360 Excavator Above 10 Tonnes
- Tracked or wheeled configurations where applicable
Candidates complete the appropriate training and assessment before receiving certification through the relevant NPORS registration route.
In-House 360 Excavator Training
Some employers only require operators to use company machinery within their own working environment and do not specifically require an NPORS Operator Card.
Where accepted, in-house excavator training can provide documented evidence of instruction, practical training and assessment.
An in-house certificate is not the same as an NPORS Operator Card.
Acceptance depends on the employer, client, principal contractor, site and insurer, so requirements should be confirmed before choosing this route.
What Will I Learn on a 360 Excavator Training Course?
The exact course content depends on your experience and the excavator category being completed.
Training and assessment can include:
- Operator responsibilities and safe working practices
- Manufacturer information and operator manuals
- Daily pre-use inspections
- Identifying and reporting machine defects
- Excavator controls and safety systems
- Safe mounting and dismounting
- Travelling and manoeuvring
- Machine positioning and stability
- Excavating trenches and excavations
- Backfilling and reinstatement
- Grading and levelling
- Loading dumpers and other vehicles
- Working around site hazards
- Underground and overhead service awareness

PPE Required for 360 Excavator Training
STANDARD PPE
- Safety boots with suitable ankle support
- High-visibility clothing
- Safety helmet
- Suitable workwear for the conditions
ADDITIONAL PPE WHERE REQUIRED
- Gloves
- Eye protection
- Hearing protection
- Site-specific PPE
Customer-Site Training: Candidates must also comply with the PPE requirements in force at the workplace.
PPE should be serviceable, correctly fitted and suitable for safely mounting, operating and leaving the excavator.
Practical 360 Excavator Course & Operator Training
Practical machine operation forms an important part of our 360 excavator training courses.
Novice candidates progressively develop their ability to control and position the excavator before moving onto realistic exercises such as excavating, trenching, backfilling, grading and loading.
Experienced operators completing an assessment are expected to demonstrate safe, controlled and efficient machine operation throughout the required exercises.
Excavator Pre-Use Checks and Daily Inspections
These checks can help identify damage, leaks, wear or safety defects before the machine is put into operation.
Checks may include:
- Engine and hydraulic fluid levels
- Tracks or tyres
- Hydraulic hoses and components
- Buckets and attachments
- Attachment retaining devices
- Warning systems
- Mirrors and visibility aids
- Guards and safety equipment
- General machine condition
Operators should also understand how defects are reported and when a machine should be taken out of service until a problem has been investigated or repaired.
Excavator Attachments and Additional Training
Modern excavators can operate a wide range of attachments, including hydraulic breakers, selector grabs, augers, specialist buckets and tiltrotators.
Changing an attachment can affect the way the excavator behaves, including its operating weight, stability and safe working limits.
Operators should understand the correct attachment procedures and the limitations of the machine and attachment being used.
Additional attachment training can be arranged where operators regularly work with specialist excavator equipment.
Using a 360 Excavator for Lifting Operations
Using an excavator to lift freely suspended loads introduces additional risks compared with normal digging operations.
Operators need to consider factors including the load weight, lifting radius, machine configuration, ground conditions, lifting accessories and excavator stability.
How Is NPORS 360 Excavator Training Assessed?
Candidates must demonstrate the required knowledge and practical operating ability.
The assessment is matched to the relevant excavator category and operator route.
Theory Assessment
The knowledge assessment checks the operator's understanding of safe excavator use and their responsibilities when working on site.
- Relevant health and safety responsibilities
- Manufacturer guidance and machine limitations
- Stability, ground conditions and working hazards
- Safe digging, travelling and lifting principles
- Emergency procedures and defect reporting
Practical Assessment
Candidates must complete a series of practical tasks while maintaining control of the excavator and working safely around the assessment area.
- Pre-use checks and machine preparation
- Safe mounting, starting and control checks
- Travelling and positioning the excavator
- Excavating, backfilling and reinstating the area
- Safe shutdown and end-of-shift procedures
Excavator Ticket, Digger Ticket or Excavator Licence – What Do They Mean?
If you need recognised excavator training for work, you may hear terms such as excavator ticket, 360 excavator ticket, digger ticket, excavator licence or digger licence used to describe operator training and certification.
There isn't a single government-issued "digger licence" for workplace excavator operation in the same way that a driving licence is required for driving a car on the public road.
Employers and construction sites normally require suitable evidence that an operator has received appropriate training and has demonstrated competence for the type and category of excavator being operated.
Vally Plant Training provides NPORS 360 Excavator Training and assessment, with operator-card options available according to the candidate's experience, excavator category and workplace requirements.
NPORS 360 Excavator Certification
Successful candidates completing the appropriate NPORS route can receive an NPORS Operator Card for the excavator category successfully completed.
The correct registration and card route should be established before training so that your certification is appropriate for your employer, construction site or principal contractor requirements.
Upgrade Your NPORS Red Card to a Blue Competent Operator Card
Our NVQ assessments are normally completed in the workplace while the operator carries out their normal plant duties.
Do I Need a Licence or Digger Ticket to Operate a 360 Excavator?
There is no separate government-issued 360 excavator licence or digger licence for operating an excavator in the workplace in the same way that you need a driving licence to drive a car on the public road.
However, employers have a legal responsibility to ensure anyone operating work equipment has received adequate training and is competent to use it safely.
On construction sites, operators may also be required to provide recognised evidence of their training and competence.
This is why terms such as digger ticket, excavator ticket and 360 excavator licence are commonly used when people are looking for recognised operator training and cards.
Vally Plant Training provides NPORS 360 Excavator Training and testing, with the appropriate operator-card route depending on the candidate's experience, qualifications and site requirements.
