Start Your NPORS Plant Training
Already Trained? You May Not Need Another Full Plant Operator Course
Already hold an NPORS, CPCS, RTITB, LANTRA or another recognised operator qualification and need to refresh your plant operating skills?
You may not need to start again with a full novice course.
NPORS Refresher Training is designed for previously trained operators who remain experienced on the machine but need to update their knowledge, refresh practical skills and demonstrate that they can still operate safely and competently.
At Vally Plant Training, refresher courses are available for a wide range of plant and equipment categories. Training can be completed at our centre in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, or on suitable customer sites throughout the UK.
However, there is an important distinction operators frequently misunderstand:
Completing refresher training and renewing an NPORS operator card are not necessarily the same thing.
If your main concern is an expiring Blue Competent Operator Card, read our guide to renewing an NPORS Blue Competent Operator Card before booking refresher training.
IMPORTANT DISTINCTION
NPORS Refresher Training Is Not Automatically NPORS Card Renewal
Refresher training updates an existing operator's knowledge and practical skills. Card renewal is the process required to renew a particular operator card.
The correct route depends on the card you hold, its status, your plant category and your operating history. Check what you actually need before paying for another course.
What Is NPORS Refresher Training?
NPORS refresher training is intended for operators who have previously received recognised training and already have practical experience operating the relevant machine or equipment.
Unlike novice training, a refresher course does not start from the assumption that you have never used the machine.
Instead, it revisits the essential knowledge and practical skills an existing operator should already understand.
Depending on the plant category, refresher training can cover:
- Pre-use inspections
- Defect reporting
- Manufacturer’s instructions
- Machine controls and safety devices
- Correct operating procedures
- Stability
- Ground conditions
- Site hazards
- Safe manoeuvring
- Loading and unloading where applicable
- Attachments
- Working around pedestrians and other plant
- Safe shutdown and securing procedures
- Relevant health and safety requirements
The instructor can also identify unsafe habits or weaknesses that may have developed since the operator’s original training.
The purpose is not simply to put somebody through another test. It is to refresh knowledge, correct weaknesses and confirm that the operator can continue using the equipment safely and competently.

Who Can Take an NPORS Refresher Course?
NPORS refresher training is aimed at previously trained operators, not complete beginners.
You should normally be able to provide evidence that you have previously received recognised training for the relevant machine or equipment.
Depending on the circumstances, this may include an existing or previous operator card or recognised certification such as:
- NPORS
- CPCS
- RTITB
- LANTRA
- Other suitable recognised operator certification
Previous certification alone does not necessarily mean refresher training is automatically the right route.
You should also have sufficient previous operating experience and retain an appropriate level of practical ability.
If you have never been formally trained on the machine, our NPORS Novice Training Guide explains the training route designed for new and inexperienced operators.
What If My Plant Operator Card Has Expired?
An expired operator card does not automatically mean you need a refresher course, and completing a refresher course does not automatically renew every type of card.
The first step is to establish:
What card do you hold?
Which plant category is on it?
When did it expire?
Have you continued operating the machine?
Are you trying to renew the same card or obtain a different card?
These details matter because the appropriate route can be different for an operator whose card recently expired but who uses the machine every day compared with somebody who has not operated the machine for several years.
If you hold an NPORS Blue Competent Operator Card, use our NPORS Blue Card renewal guideto check the renewal route rather than assuming you need refresher training.
If you’re not sure which NPORS card you currently hold, our NPORS Cards Explained Guide explains the different operator-card routes.
What If I Haven’t Operated the Machine for Several Years?
This is where an honest assessment of your current ability matters.
A card proves that you reached a particular standard at a point in time. It does not guarantee that your practical skills remain at exactly the same level indefinitely.
If you have been away from a machine for a significant period, you may have forgotten:
- Control functions
- Inspection procedures
- Stability principles
- Load limitations
- Correct operating sequences
- Attachment procedures
- Site safety requirements
- Safe parking and shutdown procedures
Technology and working practices may also have changed.
In these circumstances, refresher training may be valuable, but the amount of training required should reflect your current competence, not simply the card you previously held.
If significant retraining is required, a longer training route may be more appropriate.
BEEN AWAY FROM THE MACHINE?
A Previous Card Doesn't Automatically Mean Your Skills Are Current
The longer you have been away from a machine, the more important it becomes to assess your current ability properly. Refresher training should address genuine training needs rather than simply being treated as paperwork.
NPORS Refresher vs Experienced Worker Test – What’s the Difference?
These two routes are commonly confused.
An NPORS Refresher Course is for a previously trained operator who needs to update existing knowledge and practical skills.
An NPORS Experienced Worker Test (EWT) is primarily an assessment route for an operator who already has substantial practical experience and can operate the machine competently without needing a full training course.
An Experienced Worker Test should never be selected simply because it is shorter or cheaper than training.
If you already have substantial practical experience and think a test-only route may be suitable, read our NPORS Experienced Worker Test Guide before deciding which option to book.
WHICH COURSE DO I NEED?
Novice, Experienced Worker Test or Refresher?
Novice Training
For candidates with little or no previous experience who need structured operator training before assessment.
Experienced Worker Test
For experienced operators who already have the practical skills and knowledge required to be assessed.
Refresher Training
For previously trained operators who need to refresh existing knowledge and practical operating skills.
If you’re still unsure, compare the NPORS novice, refresher and Experienced Worker Test training routes before booking.
How Long Does NPORS Refresher Training Take?
NPORS refresher training is typically completed in one day, although duration can vary according to the machine category, number of candidates and identified training needs.
A refresher course should never be shortened simply to make it cheaper.
If an operator demonstrates weaknesses during the course, additional training may be required before they are ready for assessment.
Likewise, if somebody has been away from the machine for a long period and has lost significant practical ability, treating them automatically as a one-day refresher candidate may not be appropriate.
The objective is competence, not simply completing a set number of hours.
What Happens on an NPORS Refresher Course?
The exact content depends on the machine or equipment category, but refresher training normally combines theory, practical instruction and assessment.
Theory Refresher
Operators may revisit subjects such as:
- Relevant legislation and responsibilities
- Manufacturer’s instructions
- Machine limitations
- Safety devices
- Pre-use inspections
- Defect reporting
- Site hazards
- Ground conditions
- Stability
- Safe operating procedures
- Working around other people and machinery
Practical Refresher
The practical element concentrates on safe and effective machine operation.
Depending on the category, this can include:
- Correct mounting and dismounting
- Starting procedures
- Control familiarisation
- Safe manoeuvring
- Observation
- Machine positioning
- Practical operating tasks
- Attachment use
- Parking
- Shutdown
- End-of-shift procedures
Any unsafe habits identified by the instructor can be addressed before assessment.
Do Plant Operators Legally Need Refresher Training?
There isn’t a simple rule saying every plant operator must automatically complete the same refresher course at a fixed interval.
Employers have responsibilities to ensure employees who use work equipment receive adequate training and can use that equipment safely.
The need for refresher training should therefore be considered as part of maintaining competence.
Refresher training may be particularly appropriate following:
- A long period away from the machine
- Changes to equipment
- Changes to attachments
- Changes in working practices
- Introduction of new hazards
- Evidence of unsafe operation
- An accident or near miss
- An employer competence review
- Changes in the operator’s role
- A requirement from a client or site
Employers should not assume that possession of an old operator card removes the need to monitor competence.
How Often Should Plant Operators Have Refresher Training?
There is no single refresher interval that is appropriate for every operator, machine and workplace.
The need should be based on factors such as:
- Frequency of machine use
- Operator experience
- Changes in equipment
- Changes in working environment
- Accident or near-miss history
- Evidence of unsafe habits
- Manufacturer guidance
- Employer policies
- Client requirements
- Risk assessment findings
An operator using a machine every day may have different training needs from somebody who last operated it several years ago.
Refresher training should therefore be based on competence and risk, rather than treating an arbitrary date as the only deciding factor.
Can Employers Arrange NPORS Refresher Training On-Site?
Yes.
For businesses with several operators requiring refresher training, completing the course at the workplace can be particularly practical.
Vally Plant Training provides on-site NPORS plant operator training throughout the UK, subject to suitable machinery, facilities and a safe training area being available.
Training employees on their normal machine can also make the refresher more relevant to their actual working environment.
Before arranging a course, employers should check our on-site plant training requirements covering machinery, operator manuals, training areas, documentation, PPE and other site requirements.
What Is Needed for On-Site Refresher Training?
The exact requirements depend on the plant category, but employers will generally need to provide suitable equipment and a safe environment in which training and assessment can take place.
Requirements can include:
- Suitable machine or equipment
- Operator manual
- Appropriate attachments
- Safe practical training area
- Relevant inspection documentation
- LOLER documentation where applicable
- Suitable lifting accessories where applicable
- Lift plan where required
- Site RAMS where applicable
- Candidate photo identification
- Evidence of previous training
- Suitable PPE
The machine must be safe, serviceable and appropriate for the category being assessed.
What PPE Do I Need for Plant Refresher Training?
Candidates should arrive with suitable PPE for the plant category and working environment.
This will commonly include:
- Safety boots
- Hi-vis clothing
- Hard hat
- Gloves
- Suitable workwear
- Eye protection where required
- Hearing protection where required
Additional PPE may be necessary depending on the equipment and site.
COME PREPARED

Which Plant Categories Can Be Refreshed?
Refresher training can be arranged across many of the plant and equipment categories delivered by Vally Plant Training, subject to candidate eligibility and course requirements.
Popular categories include:
360 Excavator
Operators returning to excavators or needing to update existing skills can complete appropriate refresher training. See our NPORS 360 Excavator Training Course for available training routes.
Telehandler
Previously trained telescopic-handler operators can refresh pre-use checks, stability, load handling, manoeuvring and safe operation. See our NPORS Telehandler Training Course for course options.
Forward Tipping Dumper
Existing dumper operators can refresh inspection procedures, stability, travelling, loading, tipping and safe site operation through our NPORS Dumper Training Course.
CAT & Genny
Operators involved in locating underground services can update their knowledge and practical use of cable avoidance equipment through our CAT and Genny Training Course.
Refresher training is also available for other categories provided by Vally Plant Training. Contact our team if you need to confirm whether refresher training is available for your particular machine or equipment.
Can I Take Refresher Training at the Vally Plant Training Centre?
Yes, subject to the plant category being available at the centre.
Vally Plant Training’s dedicated plant training centre is at:
Newton Farm
Ashchurch
Tewkesbury
Gloucestershire
GL20 7BE
The centre is approximately five minutes from M5 Junction 9 and around a five-minute walk from Ashchurch for Tewkesbury railway station.
Centre-based training is particularly useful for individuals who do not have access to suitable machinery or a workplace where the assessment can be completed.
Businesses with suitable equipment can instead arrange on-site training.
Does Refresher Training Give Me an NPORS Card?
The answer depends on the training and registration route being completed.
This is why it is important to establish which card you currently hold and which card you actually require before booking.
NPORS has different operator-card routes, including Traditional and CSCS-logoed operator cards.
If you’re unsure what the different cards mean, read our NPORS operator cards explained guide before choosing your training route.
Operators specifically trying to renew a Blue Competent Operator Card should instead check the NPORS Blue Competent Operator Card renewal requirements.
NPORS Refresher Training for Employers
Refresher training is not only about operator cards.
For an employer, it can form part of a wider programme for maintaining plant competence and safe working practices.
An experienced operator may have used the same machine for years but gradually developed shortcuts or poor habits.
A structured refresher provides an opportunity to revisit:
- Daily inspections
- Defect reporting
- Safe operating procedures
- Manufacturer guidance
- Machine limitations
- Site-specific risks
- Recent changes in working practice
- Correct use of attachments
- Safe interaction with pedestrians and other plant
This is particularly useful where a business has several operators requiring consistent standards across its workforce.

REFRESHER TRAINING QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about NPORS refresher courses, expired cards, previous qualifications and choosing the correct training route.
What is NPORS refresher training?
NPORS refresher training is intended for previously trained operators who need to update existing knowledge and practical operating skills. It is different from novice training, which is designed for people with little or no previous operating experience.
Does NPORS refresher training renew my NPORS card?
Not automatically. Refresher training and card renewal are different processes. The route depends on the type of card you hold and your circumstances. If you hold a Blue Card, read our NPORS Blue Competent Operator Card Renewal Guide before booking training.
Can I take an NPORS refresher course if my card has expired?
An expired card does not automatically determine which training route you need. Your previous certification, operating history, current competence, plant category and the card you now require should all be considered before deciding whether refresher training is appropriate.
How long does an NPORS refresher course take?
NPORS refresher training is typically completed in one day, although the actual duration can vary according to the plant category, candidate numbers and identified training needs.
Can I do refresher training if I have a CPCS card?
Suitable recognised previous certification may support eligibility for a refresher route, but the correct option depends on the category, your operating experience and what certification you require afterwards. Your existing documents should be checked before the course is booked.
What is the difference between an NPORS refresher and an Experienced Worker Test?
Refresher training updates the skills of a previously trained operator. An Experienced Worker Test is primarily an assessment route for somebody who already has sufficient practical experience and competence. Read our NPORS Experienced Worker Test Guide if you think the experienced route may be more appropriate.
How often should plant operators have refresher training?
There is no single interval appropriate to every operator and machine. Employers should consider factors including frequency of use, changes in equipment or working conditions, accidents or near misses, evidence of unsafe operation and the operator's current competence.
Can NPORS refresher training be done on our site?
Yes. Vally Plant Training provides on-site refresher training throughout the UK where suitable machinery, documentation and a safe practical training area are available. Employers can check our on-site plant training requirements before arranging a course.
What if I have not operated the machine for several years?
Your current ability should be considered rather than relying solely on an old operator card. If significant skills have been lost, additional training may be required. The appropriate course should reflect your actual competence and training needs.
Where can I take NPORS refresher training?
Vally Plant Training provides NPORS refresher courses at our plant training centre in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, and on suitable customer sites throughout the UK. Our NPORS plant operator training routes can help you compare refresher, novice and Experienced Worker Test options.
