What Does a Lift Supervisor Do?
A Lift Supervisor is responsible for supervising the safe execution of a lifting operation in accordance with the agreed lift plan or method statement.
The Lift Supervisor does not simply stand nearby while a crane or item of plant lifts a load.
The role involves coordinating the lifting team, checking that the planned arrangements are being followed and responding when conditions change.
HSE guidance states that the crane supervisor should direct and supervise the lifting operation so that it is carried out in accordance with the method statement.
The supervisor should also have sufficient competence, experience and authority to stop the lifting operation if it becomes unsafe to proceed.
Typical responsibilities can include:
- Understanding the lift plan and method statement
- Confirming the lifting team understands its responsibilities
- Checking that the correct lifting equipment is being used
- Monitoring exclusion zones
- Checking communication arrangements
- Monitoring site and ground conditions
- Confirming the planned sequence is followed
- Recognising changes from the lift plan
- Preventing unauthorised interference with the operation
- Stopping the lift where unsafe conditions develop
- Communicating with the Appointed Person where changes are required
This is why competent Lift Supervisors are such an important part of lifting operations on construction, civil engineering, utilities, infrastructure and industrial sites.
Who Should Attend Lift Supervisor Training?
The course is suitable for people who are moving into, or already carrying out, responsibility for supervising lifting operations.
Candidates commonly include:
- Experienced Slinger Signallers
- Existing Crane Supervisors
- Site Supervisors
- Construction Supervisors
- Lifting-team members
- Plant operators with lifting experience
- Groundworkers progressing into supervisory roles
- Foremen
- Site managers involved with lifting
- Employees selected by their employer to supervise lifting operations
Previous practical experience around lifting operations is extremely valuable.
A Lift Supervisor needs to understand how lifting work actually happens on site, not simply learn regulations and terminology in a classroom.
Which Lift Supervisor Course Do I Need?
Novice Lift Supervisor Training
Train with confidence
Practical skills for safe, competent operators

The novice route allows a maximum of 6 candidates.
Experienced / Refresher Lift Supervisor Training
The 1-day experienced or refresher route is for existing Lift Supervisors or suitably experienced lifting personnel who already have the necessary underpinning knowledge and need assessment or updated training.

Lift Supervisor vs Appointed Person vs Slinger Signaller
These roles work together, but they are not interchangeable.
Slinger Signaller
The Slinger Signaller works directly with the load.
Responsibilities can include selecting and checking lifting accessories, attaching the load, controlling it and communicating with the operator.
View our NPORS Slinger Signaller Training Course.
Lift Supervisor
The Lift Supervisor supervises the lifting operation and makes sure the lift is carried out in accordance with the agreed plan and safe system of work.
The supervisor needs sufficient authority to intervene and stop the lift where conditions become unsafe.
Appointed Person
The Appointed Person has responsibility for planning lifting operations and establishing the safe system of work.
This is a more senior planning role requiring appropriate theoretical and practical knowledge of lifting operations.
What Will I Learn on the Lift Supervisor Course?
The exact content depends on the course route and candidates' existing experience, but training can cover:
- Duties and responsibilities of a Lift Supervisor
- LOLER requirements
- PUWER awareness
- BS 7121 guidance
- Understanding lift plans
- Method statements
- Risk assessments
- Safe systems of work
- Roles within the lifting team
- Appointed Person responsibilities
- Slinger Signaller responsibilities
- Operator responsibilities
- Crane and lifting-equipment awareness
- Lifting accessories
- Working load limits
- Thorough examination
- Pre-use checks
- Ground conditions
- Exclusion zones
- Load control
- Communication methods
- Hand signals
- Environmental conditions
- Proximity hazards
- Overhead services
- Underground services
- Changes to the lifting operation
- Emergency procedures
- Practical supervision
- Authority to stop an unsafe lift
The purpose of the course is to develop someone who understands what should be happening during a lifting operation, what could go wrong and when intervention is necessary.
Understanding the Lift Plan
A Lift Supervisor needs to be able to understand the lift plan they have been given.
The plan may contain information about:
- Lifting equipment
- Load weight
- Load dimensions
- Radius
- Configuration
- Lifting accessories
- Sling arrangements
- Ground conditions
- Crane or plant positioning
- Exclusion zones
- Personnel
- Communication
- Load travel path
- Landing position
- Environmental limitations
- Emergency arrangements
The Lift Supervisor's role is fundamentally different from that of the person who created the plan.
The supervisor's job is to ensure the lifting operation is executed in accordance with the plan.
If site conditions or the proposed lift change significantly, the supervisor should not simply rewrite the operation on the spot and continue.
The change needs to be dealt with by someone with the appropriate competence and authority.
LOLER and the Lift Supervisor
LOLER – the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 – is central to lifting operations in the workplace.
LOLER requires lifting operations involving lifting equipment to be:
- Properly planned by a competent person
- Appropriately supervised
- Carried out safely
The regulations also place requirements around the suitability and marking of lifting equipment and, where applicable, statutory thorough examination.
For the Lift Supervisor, the important point is that supervision is not an optional extra added to a lift after it has been planned.
The level of supervision needs to reflect the risks and complexity of the operation.
Read our LOLER Regulations Explained Guide for more practical information.
PUWER and Lifting Equipment
Many items used for lifting are also work equipment and therefore fall within the scope of PUWER – the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
Employers need to ensure work equipment is suitable, maintained and used by people who have received appropriate information, instruction and training.
The Lift Supervisor therefore needs an awareness of the wider safe-use requirements surrounding the machinery and equipment being used.
BS 7121 and Safe Lifting Operations
BS 7121 is an important series of British Standards providing guidance for the safe use of cranes.
Lift Supervisor training develops awareness of recognised lifting-industry practice and the responsibilities of personnel involved in lifting operations.
The crane supervisor course is not simply about remembering regulation numbers.
Candidates need to understand how recognised guidance translates into decisions made during a real lifting operation.
Why Authority to Stop the Lift Matters
One of the most important responsibilities of a Lift Supervisor is knowing when not to continue.
Examples might include:
- Ground conditions deteriorating
- Unexpected obstructions
- Incorrect lifting accessories
- Damaged equipment
- Loss of communication
- People entering an exclusion zone
- Unexpected changes to the load
- Crane or plant position differing from the plan
- Weather conditions exceeding safe limits
- The planned lifting method no longer being achievable
A supervisor needs enough knowledge to recognise that something has changed and enough authority to prevent the operation continuing unsafely.
That practical judgement is a major part of competent lift supervision.
Communication During Lifting Operations
Good lifting operations depend on clear communication.
The Lift Supervisor needs to understand:
- Who is controlling the operation
- Who is authorised to signal the operator
- What communication method is being used
- What happens if communication is lost
- How instructions are communicated to the lifting team
- How changes or concerns are escalated
- When the lift must stop
Confusion over who is giving instructions can introduce unnecessary risk.
Everyone involved should understand their role before lifting begins.
Lifting Accessories and the Lift Supervisor
Lift Supervisors need a working understanding of the lifting accessories being used during the operation.
These can include:
- Chain slings
- Web slings
- Round slings
- Shackles
- Hooks
- Master links
- Spreader beams
- Lifting beams
- Other specialist lifting accessories
The supervisor is not there simply to watch the crane.
They need to recognise whether the lifting operation is being carried out using the equipment and arrangements specified within the lift plan.
Thorough Examination and Inspection
Lifting equipment and accessories need appropriate inspection and, where required, statutory thorough examination.
The Lift Supervisor should understand the difference between:
- Pre-use checks
- Routine inspections
- Thorough examinations
A quick visual check before a lift does not replace a required thorough examination.
Where documentation or equipment condition is not satisfactory, the operation should not simply continue because the lift is considered routine.
Lift Supervisor Training for Excavator Lifting
Lift supervision isn't limited to conventional mobile or tower cranes.
Lifting operations may involve other suitable lifting equipment, including excavators used for lifting.
If an excavator is being used to lift pipes, manhole rings, trench boxes or other suspended loads, the lifting operation still needs appropriate planning, supervision and safe execution.
Operators involved in this work may also require our NPORS Excavator as a Crane Training.
This is particularly useful for businesses building a complete lifting team rather than training individual roles in isolation.
Lift Supervisor Training for Telehandler Lifting Operations
Telehandlers may also be used for lifting suspended loads where the machine, attachment and lifting arrangement are suitable for the task.
Employers need to consider the competence of everyone involved in the operation, not just the telehandler operator.
Where a Lift Supervisor is required, they need to understand the lift plan and how the operation should be safely carried out.
Lift Supervisor Course Assessment
Candidates complete theory and practical assessment appropriate to the NPORS Lift Supervisor course.
Assessment can include knowledge and understanding of:
- Lift Supervisor duties
- Lift plans
- Relevant legislation
- Safe systems of work
- Lifting equipment
- Lifting accessories
- Roles and responsibilities
- Hazard identification
- Communication
- Practical supervision
- Responding to unsafe situations
Successful candidates who meet the required standard receive the relevant NPORS certification.
Lift Supervisor Ticket & NPORS N405 Certification
Successful candidates receive certification for the NPORS Lift Supervisor category in accordance with the applicable NPORS registration route.
Where the appropriate requirements are met, candidates may be able to follow the NPORS CSCS-logoed card route.
In-House Lift Supervisor Training
Vally Plant Training can also provide in-house Lift Supervisor training and certification where an NPORS card is not required.
This may be suitable for employers that need structured training and documented evidence of competence for employees working within their own organisation.
In-house certification is not the same as an NPORS Operator Card.
Acceptance depends on the employer, client, principal contractor, site and insurer, so these requirements should be checked before choosing the certification route.
