NPORS Counterbalance Forklift Operator Training

Looking for counterbalance forklift training to gain an NPORS forklift ticket, update an existing qualification or prove your skills as an experienced operator?

Vally Plant Training provides practical counterbalance forklift truck training for individuals and businesses, with novice, refresher and Experienced Worker Test routes available.

Training covers the safe operation of counterbalance forklift trucks, including pre-use checks, stability, load handling, stacking, de-stacking and safe manoeuvring.

Individuals can train at the partner training facility we use in Gloucester, while businesses can arrange on-site forklift training throughout the UK where suitable equipment and facilities are available.

For employers, forklift training is about more than putting one employee through a course.

You need operators who can use the equipment required by your business safely, efficiently and with an understanding of the risks within your workplace.

Vally Plant Training provides counterbalance forklift operator training for companies, including novice training, refresher training and Experienced Worker Tests for suitably experienced operators.

Where several employees require training, group forklift training can often be the most practical option.

We can look at the workforce as a whole, identify the appropriate training route for each operator and arrange training either at the partner facility we use in Gloucester or, where suitable, at your own workplace.

On-site training can be particularly useful for warehouses, factories, engineering companies, builders' merchants, distribution centres and industrial businesses because operators can train using equipment relevant to their normal work.

Forklift training in Gloucester

Our own Tewkesbury site isn't currently set up for counterbalance forklift training, so our centre-based forklift courses are delivered at the partner facility we use in Gloucester.

This gives individual candidates and businesses an established location where practical counterbalance forklift training and assessment can be completed using suitable equipment and facilities.

It is particularly useful for:

  • Individuals looking for forklift training
  • People trying to gain their first forklift qualification
  • Experienced operators needing an assessment
  • Small businesses without suitable training facilities
  • Employers sending several candidates together
  • Operators needing a different counterbalance forklift category

For companies with suitable equipment and facilities, we can also discuss on-site forklift training at your workplace.

Group forklift training for companies

If several employees need forklift training, booking them as a group can be considerably more practical than arranging individual courses one at a time.

Vally Plant Training provides group counterbalance forklift training for companies with new operators, existing forklift drivers and experienced employees requiring formal assessment.

A company booking might include:

  • New employees requiring novice forklift training
  • Experienced operators requiring an Experienced Worker Test
  • Existing operators requiring refresher training
  • Several employees requiring the same forklift category
  • Operators moving onto larger-capacity counterbalance forklifts
  • Employees who need training on different equipment or attachments

For suitable bookings, training can be delivered at the company's own workplace.

This reduces employee travel and allows training to take place using machinery and working conditions relevant to the business.

We can provide on-site forklift training throughout the UK, subject to suitable equipment, facilities and a safe practical training area.

If you're arranging training for several employees, send us the number of candidates, their experience levels, forklift make/model and capacity, and your workplace location.

We can then recommend the most efficient way to organise the training.

Which Forklift Training Course Do I Need?

Not everybody needs a five-day novice course.

Equally, somebody who has occasionally driven a forklift isn't automatically ready for an Experienced Worker Test.

We offer three main routes.

Novice counterbalance forklift training

Train with confidence

Practical skills for safe, competent operators

Choose the right machine category and route for your experience. Our team can discuss novice training, Experienced Worker Tests, refreshers and workplace delivery.

Our novice forklift course is intended for people with little or no previous counterbalance forklift operating experience.

Training can take up to five days, with a maximum of three candidates, allowing time for candidates to develop practical skills rather than simply preparing for a test.

The course covers the knowledge and operating techniques needed to use a counterbalance forklift safely, including pre-use checks, controls, stability, load handling, manoeuvring, stacking and de-stacking.

For someone looking to become a forklift driver, this is the normal starting route when they don't already have the required experience and training.

Experienced Worker Test

Competent forklift operators with sufficient practical experience may be suitable for an Experienced Worker Test (EWT).

The forklift EWT is a one-day test-only route, with up to four candidates.

It is not a shortcut for somebody who still needs training.

The operator should already be able to use the counterbalance forklift safely and competently, carry out appropriate checks, understand stability and capacity, handle loads correctly and complete the required practical operations without being taught how to do them during the test.

Forklift refresher training

Refresher training can be appropriate for previously trained forklift operators whose skills need updating or reassessing.

It may be considered where an operator hasn't used a forklift for some time, where an employer identifies unsafe habits or where periodic refresher training forms part of the company's competence-management arrangements.

The HSE does not prescribe one universal expiry period for forklift training.

It says employers should monitor operator performance and may decide that refresher training or retesting at set intervals is appropriate.

Do I need a forklift licence in the UK?

This is one of the most common questions people ask when looking for forklift licence training.

Strictly speaking, there is no government-issued forklift driving licence in the UK.

The HSE itself states that there is no such thing as a lift-truck licence.

What employers need is an operator who has received suitable training and can demonstrate competence for the lift truck and work they are expected to carry out.

This is why terms such as forklift licence, forklift ticket and forklift certificate are commonly used when people are actually looking for recognised forklift operator training and certification.

Completing an NPORS forklift course provides evidence of the training and assessment completed.

What is a counterbalance forklift?

A counterbalance forklift is one of the most widely used types of lift truck in the UK.

The machine uses weight at the rear of the truck to counterbalance the load being carried at the front.

Unlike some warehouse trucks, a conventional counterbalance forklift can approach a load directly, pick it up with the forks and move it without needing outriggers positioned around the load.

Counterbalance forklifts are commonly found in:

  • Warehouses
  • Distribution centres
  • Manufacturing
  • Engineering
  • Construction
  • Builders' merchants
  • Timber yards
  • Logistics
  • Agricultural businesses
  • Recycling
  • Industrial yards
  • Machinery installation
  • Freight operations

They can be powered by diesel, LPG/gas or electricity, depending on the machine and working environment.

Counterbalance forklift categories - does size matter?

Yes.

One of the areas operators and employers sometimes overlook is that counterbalance forklift training isn't simply one unlimited qualification covering every size of truck.

Vally Plant Training can provide training across three counterbalance forklift capacity ranges:

Counterbalance forklift up to 5 tonnes

This category covers many of the counterbalance forklifts commonly found in warehouses, builders' merchants, factories, logistics operations and general industrial workplaces.

For many operators, this is the category most closely associated with everyday forklift work.

Counterbalance forklift 5 to 15 tonnes

Larger counterbalance forklifts are used where heavier loads need to be handled.

These machines may be found in heavy engineering, manufacturing, machinery handling, steelwork, timber, industrial operations and other workplaces dealing with loads beyond the capacity of smaller trucks.

Counterbalance forklift over 15 tonnes

Heavy-capacity forklifts above 15 tonnes are specialist machines.

They may be used for substantial machinery, industrial components, heavy materials and other specialist load-handling operations.

The operating principles remain familiar, but the size, weight, capacity and working environment create very different considerations from operating a smaller warehouse forklift.

If you're unsure which category you require, tell us the make, model and rated capacity of the forklift when enquiring.

Which counterbalance forklift category do I need?

The correct forklift category should reflect the size and capacity of the machine you will actually operate.

Training on a smaller counterbalance forklift shouldn't automatically be treated as evidence that an operator is competent to use a substantially larger-capacity machine.

If you're unsure which category to book, send us the forklift make, model and rated capacity.

We can identify the appropriate training requirement before the course is arranged.

Can I operate a bigger forklift with the same certificate?

Don't assume that training on a smaller forklift automatically makes an operator competent to use a substantially larger machine.

The HSE makes clear that training on one type of lift truck or handling attachment doesn't automatically mean an operator can safely use another without appropriate additional or conversion training.

The correct training requirement depends on the machine, previous training and the work being undertaken.

This is particularly important where a business introduces a larger-capacity forklift, different controls or a specialist attachment.

What does counterbalance forklift training cover?

The exact course will depend on the candidate's route and machine, but training can include:

  • Operator responsibilities
  • Relevant health and safety requirements
  • Forklift components and controls
  • Pre-use inspections
  • Starting and stopping safely
  • Steering and manoeuvring
  • Forklift stability
  • Stability triangle principles
  • Rated capacity
  • Load centres
  • Capacity plates
  • Assessing loads before lifting
  • Fork positioning
  • Lifting and lowering
  • Travelling with loads
  • Stacking
  • De-stacking
  • Loading and unloading
  • Working around pedestrians
  • Restricted spaces
  • Ramps and gradients
  • Parking and securing the forklift
  • Refuelling or charging considerations
  • Attachments where applicable
  • Defect identification and reporting
  • Theory and practical assessment

The purpose isn't simply to pass a test.

Candidates need to understand how the machine behaves and why poor decisions can lead to instability, dropped loads, collisions or overturning.

HSE guidance for forklift operator training

Forklift operator training should be based on the type of lift truck being used and the work the operator will actually be expected to carry out.

The Health and Safety Executive's guidance for rider-operated lift trucks is contained in L117 - Rider-operated lift trucks: Operator training and safe use.

HSE guidance describes lift-truck operator training in three stages:

  • Basic training - developing the fundamental skills and knowledge needed to operate the lift truck.
  • Specific job training - understanding the particular truck, loads and operating conditions involved in the job.
  • Familiarisation training - supervised practical experience applying those skills in the operator's normal workplace.

Forklift stability - why counterbalance trucks overturn

A counterbalance forklift may look extremely stable because of its weight, but that weight doesn't make it impossible to overturn.

Stability can be affected by:

  • Load weight
  • Load centre
  • Load position
  • Mast height
  • Turning speed
  • Braking
  • Gradients
  • Uneven surfaces
  • Incorrect tyre condition
  • Attachments
  • Sudden steering
  • Travelling with a raised load

Operators need to understand that the truck's behaviour changes once a load is lifted.

A capacity plate isn't a target to guess at.

The operator needs to understand the truck's rated capacity and the conditions under which that capacity applies.

Forklift load centres and rated capacity

A forklift rated to lift a particular weight cannot necessarily lift that weight in every possible configuration.

The position of the load matters.

As the load centre moves further away from the fork face, the effect of the load on the truck changes.

Attachments can also affect the machine's capacity.

This is why forklift training includes understanding capacity plates, load centres, load stability and the limitations of the truck rather than simply teaching someone how to raise and lower the forks.

Daily forklift checks

A trained operator should know how to carry out appropriate pre-use checks before operating the forklift.

Checks can include items such as:

  • Tyres and wheels
  • Forks
  • Mast
  • Lift chains
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Hoses
  • Controls
  • Steering
  • Brakes
  • Warning devices
  • Seat and restraint system
  • Lights where fitted
  • Fluid levels
  • Battery or fuel system
  • Capacity plate
  • Visible damage

Problems should be reported through the employer's defect-reporting procedure.

A damaged or unsafe forklift should not simply be carried on with because production is busy.

Electric, diesel and LPG counterbalance forklifts

Counterbalance forklifts are available with different power sources.

Electric forklifts

Electric counterbalance forklifts are widely used in warehouses, factories and indoor environments.

They offer different operating and charging considerations from combustion-engine trucks.

Diesel forklifts

Diesel counterbalance forklifts are common in outdoor yards, construction-related environments and industrial workplaces where robust machines are needed for regular materials handling.

LPG forklifts

LPG or gas-powered counterbalance trucks are another common option and are used across warehouses, manufacturing and industrial operations.

The basic operating principles of a counterbalance truck remain important across all three, but operators must also be familiar with the specific machine they are expected to use.

Forklift attachments and specialist load handling

Forklift trucks aren't always used with standard forks.

Depending on the workplace, machines may use attachments such as:

  • Sideshifts
  • Fork positioners
  • Clamps
  • Jibs
  • Extensions
  • Specialist handling attachments

An attachment can change how the forklift behaves and may affect its capacity.

For example, an industrial business using a jib attachment to handle an underslung load has a different operating requirement from a warehouse driver simply moving palletised goods.

Do I need forklift conversion training?

An operator who is already trained and competent on one type of lift truck may require conversion training before operating a significantly different forklift, capacity category or attachment.

The amount of additional training required will depend on the operator's existing competence and how different the new equipment is from the machine they already use.

Examples could include moving:

  • From a smaller counterbalance forklift to a substantially larger machine
  • Between different types of lift truck
  • Onto a forklift with unfamiliar controls or operating characteristics
  • Onto specialist load-handling equipment
  • Onto a forklift fitted with an attachment the operator hasn't previously used

Conversion training shouldn't be treated as a shortcut for an operator who doesn't already have the necessary underlying forklift skills.

If your business is changing its forklift fleet or introducing larger machines or specialist attachments, tell us what your operators currently use and what equipment they're moving onto.

We can advise on the appropriate training route.

Forklift training for warehouses and distribution centres

Warehouses are one of the environments most closely associated with counterbalance forklifts.

Operators may need to:

  • Load and unload vehicles
  • Move palletised goods
  • Stack products
  • Feed production areas
  • Move stock between buildings
  • Operate around pedestrians
  • Work in restricted aisles
  • Enter or leave loading areas

The challenge isn't just controlling the forklift.

A competent operator must continually consider pedestrians, blind spots, load stability, floor conditions, racking, doorways and other workplace traffic.

Forklift training for manufacturing and engineering businesses

Counterbalance forklifts are also heavily used in engineering and manufacturing.

Loads may be heavier, irregularly shaped or considerably more difficult to handle than a standard pallet.

This is particularly relevant to businesses using the 5–15 tonne and over 15 tonne forklift categories.

Training needs to reflect the actual machine and the type of work the operator will carry out.

For businesses with several employees, on-site training can be especially useful because operators can train in an environment relevant to their normal work.

On-site forklift training for businesses

Vally Plant Training provides on-site forklift training for businesses throughout the UK, making workplace delivery particularly suitable for employers with several forklift operators requiring training or assessment.

Rather than sending employees individually to external courses, we can come to a suitable warehouse, factory, engineering facility, distribution centre or industrial workplace and train operators using the company's own counterbalance forklift where appropriate.

This can make workplace forklift training particularly effective for group bookings because the training can reflect the equipment and operating environment employees encounter in their normal job.

Suitable on-site training may be available for:

  • Warehouses
  • Factories
  • Engineering businesses
  • Distribution centres
  • Industrial sites
  • Construction companies
  • Builders' merchants
  • Manufacturing facilities
  • Machinery handling businesses
  • Logistics operations

The site must provide suitable equipment, facilities and a safe area where training and assessment can be completed away from unnecessary operational pressures.

Gloucester forklift training for individuals

Individuals don't need to work for a company that owns a forklift to enquire about training.

If you're looking for a forklift course in Gloucestershire, our partner training facility in Gloucester gives us an option for candidates who don't have access to a suitable workplace and machine.

This can suit:

  • People wanting to become forklift operators
  • Warehouse workers looking to gain an additional skill
  • Experienced drivers needing recognised assessment
  • Operators returning to forklift work
  • Candidates wanting to improve employment opportunities
  • Workers needing a different forklift category

Tell us your experience level when enquiring so we can identify whether novice, refresher or experienced operator testing is the most appropriate route.

Can forklift training help me get a job?

A forklift qualification can be useful when applying for jobs where lift-truck operation forms part of the role.

Forklift operators work across warehouses, manufacturing, distribution, logistics, construction-related businesses, builders' merchants and industrial workplaces.

Training doesn't guarantee employment, but recognised evidence of operator training can demonstrate to an employer that you have completed formal instruction and assessment rather than simply having informal experience.

For somebody completely new to forklift operation, the novice course provides the structured training needed to develop those skills properly.

Employers still have responsibilities after forklift training

A training certificate isn't the end of an employer's responsibilities.

HSE guidance describes lift-truck operator training in three stages: basic training, specific job training and familiarisation training.

An operator also needs to become familiar with the particular truck, loads, workplace and tasks they will encounter.

Employers should therefore make sure workers understand issues such as:

  • Workplace traffic routes
  • Pedestrian areas
  • Local speed restrictions
  • Loading bays
  • Racking
  • Site gradients
  • Surface conditions
  • Specific loads
  • Attachments
  • Refuelling or charging arrangements
  • Company procedures

Formal operator training is a crucial part of competence, but it must sit within a properly managed workplace transport system.

The HSE's Lift-Truck Training Guidance provides further information for employers.

Do forklift certificates expire?

There isn't one universal legal expiry date that applies to all forklift operator training.

This is often misunderstood.

The HSE says employers should monitor operator performance and consider refresher training or retesting where appropriate.

Some organisations choose set refresher intervals as part of their competence-management system.

Refresher training may also become appropriate following:

  • A long period without operating
  • Unsafe operating practices
  • An accident or near miss
  • Changes in working methods
  • Introduction of different equipment
  • Employer or site requirements

Always check the requirements of the employer, client or workplace where the forklift will be operated.

Counterbalance forklift certification

Candidates who successfully complete the appropriate training and assessment receive certification relevant to the route completed.

People frequently search for a forklift licence, forklift ticket or forklift certificate, but there is no government-issued forklift driving licence in the UK.

What matters is that an operator has received appropriate training and can demonstrate competence for the type of lift truck and work they are expected to undertake.

For employers, forklift certification also provides documented evidence of the training and assessment completed.

Vally Plant Training offers NPORS forklift certification as well as an in-house certification option where appropriate.

The correct choice depends on where the operator will work and what the employer, client, site or principal contractor requires.

NPORS forklift training

Vally Plant Training is an NPORS Accredited Training Provider.

NPORS provides a recognised route for operator training and assessment across plant and machinery categories, including counterbalance forklifts.

Depending on the candidate's circumstances and working environment, different NPORS card routes may be available.

In-house forklift training

Some employers may prefer an in-house training and certification route for employees operating solely within their own workplace.

CITB funding for forklift training

Vally Plant Training is a CITB Training Provider Network Member.

If you're booking training for several employees and your company is CITB registered, mention this when requesting your quotation.

PPE Required for Counterbalance Forklift Training

Candidates should wear suitable PPE for the practical forklift training environment.

This would normally include:

  • Safety Boots
  • Hi-Vis Clothing
  • Suitable Workwear
  • Hard Hat Where Required
  • Gloves Where Required
  • Site-Specific PPE Where Required

Candidates completing on-site forklift training must also comply with any additional PPE requirements specified by the customer workplace.

Counterbalance forklift training prices

Forklift training costs depend on the route required, number of candidates, forklift category and whether training is delivered at our Gloucester partner facility or at the customer's workplace.

For the most accurate quotation, tell us:

  • Number of candidates
  • Novice, refresher or experienced operator

Frequently asked questions

How long does counterbalance forklift training take?

A novice counterbalance forklift course can take up to five days, depending on the candidate and training requirements.

Experienced and competent operators may instead be suitable for a one-day Experienced Worker Test.

If you're new to operating forklifts, our NPORS Novice Training Guide explains how the novice route works.

Do I need a forklift licence to drive a forklift in the UK?

There is no government-issued forklift driving licence in the UK.

Employers must make sure forklift operators receive appropriate training and are competent to operate the type of lift truck they use.

Terms such as forklift licence, forklift ticket and forklift certificate are commonly used when people are actually referring to operator training and certification.

Our Complete NPORS Guide explains NPORS training and certification in more detail.

Can I do forklift training if I've never driven a forklift before?

Yes.

Novice counterbalance forklift training is specifically designed for candidates with little or no previous operating experience.

Training develops the practical skills and knowledge required before the candidate completes the relevant assessment.

I already drive a forklift at work. Do I need the full novice course?

Not necessarily.

A competent and suitably experienced operator may be eligible for an Experienced Worker Test, which is a test-only route rather than a novice training course.

It isn't suitable for somebody who still needs instruction or substantial training.

Read our NPORS Experienced Worker Test Guide to understand the difference.

Does a forklift certificate expire?

There isn't one universal legal expiry period applying to every forklift training certificate.

Employers should monitor operator competence and arrange refresher training or reassessment when appropriate.

Refresher training may also be required by an employer, client or site.

Our NPORS Refresher Training Guide provides further information.

Can I operate a 15-tonne forklift if I trained on a smaller counterbalance forklift?

Don't assume that training on a smaller forklift automatically makes you competent to operate a substantially larger machine.

Vally Plant Training offers counterbalance forklift training for machines up to 5 tonnes, 5–15 tonnes and over 15 tonnes.

Tell us the make, model and capacity of the forklift you need to operate so we can advise on the correct category.

Where does Vally Plant Training deliver counterbalance forklift training?

Centre-based counterbalance forklift training is delivered at the partner training facility we use in Gloucester.

Our Tewkesbury centre isn't currently set up for this particular course.

Businesses with suitable equipment and facilities can also arrange on-site forklift training throughout the UK.

Can you train several of our forklift operators at our workplace?

Yes.

Group forklift training is particularly suitable for businesses with several employees requiring training or assessment.

Subject to suitable equipment, facilities and a safe practical area, we can deliver training at your workplace.

Employers can check our Customer Site Requirements before arranging on-site training.

Is counterbalance forklift training the same as telehandler or reach truck training?

No.

Different types of lift truck have different operating characteristics and training requirements.

Counterbalance forklift training shouldn't automatically be treated as competence to operate a telehandler, reach truck or another substantially different machine.

If your employees also operate telescopic handlers, see our Telehandler Training Course.

What information do you need to quote for company forklift training?

Tell us how many operators need training, their current experience, the forklift make/model and capacity, your location and whether any attachments are used.

We can then establish the appropriate novice, refresher or experienced route and advise whether Gloucester or on-site workplace training is the better option.
