Which Micro Excavator or Mini Digger Course Do I Need?

Choosing the correct training route matters.

An Experienced Worker Test is not a shortened training course and should not be booked by someone who still needs instruction.

Novice Micro Excavator Training

Our novice micro digger course is designed for people with little or no previous excavator experience.

You will receive structured theory and practical instruction before completing the relevant NPORS assessments.

The course runs for five days and is delivered one-to-one.

You will not have to share the excavator with several other novice candidates or lose practical operating time while waiting for your turn.

Micro Excavator Experienced Worker Test

Already operating micro excavators competently?

The Experienced Worker Test is a single-day, test-only route for operators who already have sufficient practical experience and underpinning knowledge.

Candidates complete the required theory and practical assessments without attending a full novice course.

Micro Excavator Refresher Training

Refresher training is available for operators who have previously completed recognised training but need to update their knowledge, practical skills or certification.

It may be suitable if you have spent time away from the machine, your employer has identified a training need or your existing operator card is approaching renewal.

The duration depends on your experience, previous certification and the areas that need updating.

One-to-One Micro Digger Training

Learning to operate an excavator safely takes practical time on the controls.

That is why our five-day novice micro excavator course is delivered one-to-one.

You receive the instructor's full attention throughout the course, allowing the training to progress at a pace that suits your development.

There is no sharing the excavator with several other novice candidates and no unnecessary loss of operating time.

One-to-one training provides:

Train with confidence

Practical skills for safe, competent operators

Choose the right machine category and route for your experience. Our team can discuss novice training, Experienced Worker Tests, refreshers and workplace delivery.

  • Dedicated practical operating time
  • Direct support from your instructor
  • Immediate feedback and correction
  • More time to practise difficult tasks
  • Training adapted to your progress
  • Better preparation for the theory and practical assessments
  • Experience completing full operating tasks
  • Time to build confidence with the machine and controls

Our aim is not simply to prepare you for a test.

We want you to understand the excavator, recognise hazards and develop the controlled operating skills expected from a safe and competent operator.

Guaranteed Pass or One Free Retest

We are confident in the quality of our one-to-one novice training.

If you complete the full novice course but do not achieve the required standard during your NPORS assessment, we will provide one free retest in accordance with our applicable booking terms.

A pass can never be awarded automatically.

Every candidate must demonstrate the required theoretical knowledge and practical operating standard.

Our free-retest promise gives genuine novice candidates additional reassurance when investing in a full course.

What Is a Micro Excavator?

A micro excavator is a compact 360-degree excavator weighing up to one tonne.

It may also be described as a micro digger, mini digger or compact excavator.

These machines are designed for restricted-access sites and smaller excavation tasks where a larger excavator would be unsuitable or unable to enter the work area.

Micro excavators are commonly used for:

  • Landscaping and garden projects
  • Drainage and utility work
  • Domestic groundworks
  • Narrow-access excavation
  • Small foundations and footings
  • Trenching and service installation
  • Property maintenance
  • Construction work with restricted space
  • Loading small dumpers, trailers and skips

People searching for mini excavator training, a mini digger course or micro digger training are often looking for this type of operator course.

However, the machine's operating weight must always be checked because larger mini excavators may fall within a different NPORS category.

What Will I Learn on the Micro Excavator Course?

Develop practical micro digger skills and safety knowledge, from daily checks to controlled excavation and safe shutdown.

Machine Checks & Controls

Understand operator responsibilities, use the manufacturer's manual, complete pre-use checks, report defects and operate the controls safely.

Travelling & Machine Stability

Practise safe travelling, manoeuvring and positioning.

Assess slopes, uneven ground and restricted spaces while working within the machine's limits.

Digging, Grading & Loading

Develop controlled digging, trenching, backfilling and levelling techniques, including dozer blade use and safe loading of suitable dumpers, trailers and skips.

Site Safety & Assessment

Recognise underground and overhead service hazards, maintain exclusion zones, park and isolate the machine safely, and prepare for NPORS theory and practical assessments.

Practical exercises depend on your training route, experience, available work area and machine configuration.

Micro Excavator Stability and Safe Operation

A smaller machine is not automatically a safer machine.

Micro excavators have a narrow footprint and may be operated close to buildings, trenches, garden walls, pedestrians and underground services.

Before operating, the candidate must consider:

  • Ground condition and bearing capacity
  • Gradients and cross-slopes
  • Excavation edges
  • Trenches and hidden voids
  • Machine configuration and operating width
  • Slewing with material in the bucket
  • Travelling with the attachment raised
  • Restricted visibility
  • People entering the working area
  • Incorrect or unsuitable attachments
  • The manufacturer's operating limits

The excavator should always be used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, site risk assessment and agreed safe system of work.

Working Near Underground Services

Micro excavators are frequently used for drainage, landscaping, utilities and domestic groundworks where underground services may be present.

Before excavation begins, the work area should be properly assessed and available service information reviewed.

Suitable locating equipment, service plans and safe digging methods may be required before mechanical excavation starts.

Who Is the Mini Excavator Course For?

Our NPORS mini excavator training is suitable for individuals and employers working across construction, groundworks, landscaping, utilities, drainage, property maintenance and civil engineering.

Typical candidates include:

  • Complete beginners entering plant operation
  • Groundworkers
  • Landscapers
  • Drainage contractors
  • Utility workers
  • Domestic excavation contractors
  • Construction operatives
  • Experienced operators requiring an NPORS mini excavator ticket
  • Existing operators needing refresher training
  • Employers training staff to use compact excavators
  • Operators moving from hand tools to compact plant machinery

Personal Protective Equipment

Candidates must arrive with suitable PPE for practical plant training.

This will normally include:

  • Safety boots with appropriate protection
  • High-visibility clothing
  • Safety helmet
  • Suitable work gloves
  • Eye protection where required
  • Hearing protection where required
  • Weather-appropriate workwear

Additional PPE may be required depending on the workplace, task, risk assessment or customer-site rules.

On-Site Micro Excavator Training

For employers with suitable machinery and facilities, Vally Plant Training delivers micro excavator and mini digger training at customer sites throughout the UK.

On-site delivery allows your operators to train using the excavator and working environment they are familiar with.

It can also reduce workforce travel and downtime when several employees require training.

Before customer-site training can take place, you will normally need:

  • A suitable and serviceable micro excavator
  • The current manufacturer's operator manual
  • A safe practical operating area
  • Suitable ground and material for excavation exercises
  • A designated loading and tipping area where required
  • Appropriate risk assessments and method statements
  • A completed daily machine inspection
  • Candidate photo identification

  • Safe separation from pedestrians and unrelated plant

Micro Excavator Training at Our Tewkesbury Centre

Individuals and employers can attend our dedicated plant training centre at Newton Farm, Ashchurch, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, GL20 7BE.

Centre training is a practical option when:

  • You are booking as an individual
  • Your employer does not own a suitable excavator
  • Your workplace does not have an appropriate training area
  • You want dedicated one-to-one novice training
  • You require a published centre price
  • You need access to a suitable machine and practical area

In-House Mini Digger Training

In-house micro excavator training and certification may be available where an NPORS Operator Card is not required.

This route can provide an employer with documented evidence of instruction, practical training and assessment for employees operating company machinery.

However, an in-house certificate is not the same as an NPORS Operator Card.

Acceptance depends on the employer, client, principal contractor, work environment and insurer.

Always check these requirements before choosing between in-house certification and NPORS mini digger training.

Micro Excavator Certification and NPORS Cards

Successful candidates can receive the appropriate NPORS registration for the N016 Micro Excavator category, subject to the selected card route and current application requirements.

The main operator card options include:

  • Traditional NPORS Operator Card
  • NPORS CSCS Red Trained Operator Card
  • NPORS CSCS Blue Competent Operator Card

The correct card depends on where you intend to work, whether a CSCS-logoed card is required and whether you hold the relevant vocational qualification.

Micro Excavator and 360 Excavator Training

The NPORS N016 Micro Excavator category covers machines up to one tonne.

It should not be confused with the below-10-tonne excavator category, which excludes micro excavators.

Always confirm the machine type, operating weight and work you will be undertaking before booking.

This helps ensure that you complete the correct digger course and have the appropriate category recorded on your operator card.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a licence to operate a micro digger in the UK?

There is no government-issued "micro digger licence" for operating an excavator on a private construction site.

However, employers must ensure that anyone using plant machinery has received adequate training and is competent to operate it safely.

Completing recognised NPORS Micro Excavator Training provides evidence of appropriate training and assessment.

Our excavator licence guide explains the difference between a licence, ticket, card and operator qualification.

Is micro excavator training the same as mini digger training?

The terms "micro excavator training", "micro digger training" and "mini digger training" are often used interchangeably, but the machine's weight matters.

The micro category covers compact 360 excavators up to one tonne.

Larger mini excavators may require a different category.

Check the machine's operating weight before booking or read our 360 excavator categories guide.

Can a complete beginner take a micro excavator course?

Yes.

The novice course is designed for candidates with little or no previous operating experience.

Training begins with the machine, controls and safety checks before progressing to practical excavating, travelling, manoeuvring and loading exercises.

The five-day course is delivered one-to-one, so the candidate receives dedicated practical time with the instructor and excavator.

How long does a micro digger training course take?

The full novice course runs for five days on a one-to-one basis.

Experienced operators may be suitable for a single-day Experienced Worker Test, while refresher training duration depends on the operator's previous training, current ability and identified development needs.

Our guide to how long excavator training takes explains why course duration varies.

How much does micro excavator training cost?

The five-day novice course starts from £2,500 plus VAT at our Tewkesbury centre.

The Experienced Worker Test starts from £360 plus VAT per person, and the applicable NPORS card and registration fee is £45 plus VAT per person.

Customer-site training is quoted separately according to the location, number of candidates and training required.

Can I take an Experienced Worker Test instead of the novice course?

Only if you already have sufficient practical micro excavator experience and underpinning knowledge.

The Experienced Worker Test is an assessment route rather than a shortened course.

Candidates are profiled before testing, and the instructor may recommend novice or refresher training where experience does not cover the required standard.

Can training be completed using our own micro excavator?

Yes.

Training can be delivered at a suitable customer site using your own machine.

The excavator must be safe, serviceable and appropriate for the category being assessed.

You will also need the manufacturer's operator manual, a suitable practical area, excavation material, the necessary site documentation and appropriate PPE.

Do I need a driving licence to operate a micro excavator?

A standard car driving licence is not normally required to operate a micro excavator within a private workplace or construction site.

The operator must still be trained, competent and authorised by the employer.

Different legal and vehicle requirements may apply if the machine is used on a public road.

Is an NPORS micro excavator card accepted on construction sites?

NPORS operator cards are widely recognised within UK construction and related industries.

However, employers, clients and principal contractors can set their own card requirements.

If you are training for a particular job or project, check whether it requires an NPORS card carrying the CSCS logo before booking.

Can I upgrade from an NPORS Red Card to a Blue Card?

Eligible construction operators can progress from an NPORS CSCS Red Trained Operator Card to a Blue Competent Operator Card by completing the relevant vocational qualification and meeting the current application requirements.

The assessment is normally completed in a genuine workplace while you demonstrate occupational competence.

Our Red-to-Blue Card guide explains the progression route.
